Reports of the outage started coming in on Twitter shortly after 2 p.m. E.T. The outage also appears to be affecting other Google services such as Google+ and Google Hangouts.
Google at around 2:12 p.m. E.T. updated its Gmail Apps Status Dashboard to say that Gmail is experiencing a service disruption.
"We're investigating reports of an issue with Gmail. We will provide more information shortly," Google said. At this point, it is unknown how many users are affected by the outage.
We've reached out to Google to find out the cause of today's outage and will update this story when we hear back.
Update: Google at 2:58 p.m. ET updated its App Status Dashboard noting that a number of other services are also experiencing service disruptions. Impacted services include: Google Calendar, Talk, Drive, Docs, Sheets, Slides, Drawings, Sites, Groups, and Google+ Hangouts.
By 3:14 p.m., Gmail service had been restored for some users, Google said.
"We expect a resolution for all users in the near future," the Web giant added. "Please note this time frame is an estimate and may change."
Update II: And we're back! Google at 3:23 p.m. said the problem with Gmail should now be resolved.
"We apologize for the inconvenience and thank you for your patience and continued support. Please rest assured that system reliability is a top priority at Google, and we are making continuous improvements to make our systems better," the company said.
The App Status Dashboard now shows a green light for all Google services except for Hangouts. Google said Hangouts should already be restored for some users, and it expects a full resolution soon.
Update III: Google+ Hangouts is now back. Google at 3:31 p.m. said the problem should be resolved.
