Recon Instruments today made its Recon Jet high-tech sunglasses available for pre-order for a limited-time price of $499.
Specifically, Recon is now selling the Pilot Edition of its glasses, which has software geared toward cyclists, triathletes, and runners. The Pilot Edition will lack some of the software features Recon expects in the final edition, but the company wanted to offer its glasses as soon as possible. And those missing features will be available via a software update at a later date.
The Regular Production version costs $599.
The Recon Jet specs are reminiscent of Google Glass. But while Recon unveiled its glasses at Google I/O last month, the Recon Jet glasses are not affiliated with Google; they just run Android.
The Recon Jet provides athletes with access to critical health and statistical details while shielding them from the blinding sun. The head gear will deliver a full portfolio of data like speed, pace, distance, time, vertical ascent, heart rate, cadence, and more.
"To say the response exceeded our expectations would be a massive understatement," Recon Instruments CEO Dan Eisenhardt said in a statement. "Now, with this first edition of Recon Jet and our soon-to-be-released SDK, we look forward to developers unleashing their creativity to build amazing apps for Recon Jet."
The gadget also serves as a hands-free device to connect users with family and friends by displaying caller ID and text message details; wearers can also upload and view social network information while running or biking.
Not a regular athlete, but really digging the Jet's style? Recon's upcoming SDK will open the floodgates for third-party developers to create Jet-compatible applications for any activity. The company, in fact, is already in development with major health and fitness organizations to create native apps for the device.
"We are proud to be launching Recon Jet for pre-sale," Eisenhardt said. "Since introducing our first HUD [Heads-Up Displays] for snow sports in 2010, we have been working tirelessly to create a high-performance sports sunglass HUD. Recon Jet is the culmination of that effort."
The Recon Jet runs on a 1-GHz dual-core processor, with dedicated graphics, Wi-Fi, ANT+, Bluetooth, GPS, an HD camera, and a comprehensive suite of sensors comparable to a tablet or smartphone. Like Google's hardware, the sunglasses can be controlled by a touch-pad located on one side of the frames.
The device will ship to the U.S., Europe, Japan, and Australia.
